Ophthalmic reading centres provide a critical resource for facilitating imaging research in ophthalmology. Recent developments in computer vision and artificial intelligence have enabled a paradigm shift in the role of reading centres. Moorfields reading centre has developed a dedicated infrastructure to allow harnessing the potential of big data analytics, computer vision and machine learning. Under the leadership of Dr Pearse Keane, the Artificial Intelligence hub at the Moorfields Reading Centre is bringing machine learning into modern eye care.

DeepMind collaboration
In 2016 Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and DeepMind Health started a partnership to explore how cutting edge technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence can help medical research into eye diseases, including age related macular degeneration and sight loss as a result of diabetes.

AlzEye
AlzEye is an unprecedented data linkage project linking >2 million retinal photos and scans of >250,000 people, who attended Moorfields Eye Hospital between 2008 and 2018 with nationally held data (NHS Digital) on people, who develop Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Led by Dr Pearse Keane, AlzEye provides a tailored unique dataset to explore patterns of retinal change associated with the development of dementia across a diverse population of varying ethnicity and socioeconomic status.

Eye2Gene is an app that will help clinicians provide a genetic diagnosis for people with progressive sight-loss caused by an inherited retinal dystrophy.

AI bioresource
As part of the Joint Research Informatics Strategy of Moorfields and the Institute of Ophthalmology we have launched an ambitious programme for the aggregation and curation of the massive imaging and clinical datasets that are stored at Moorfields Eye Hospital. This will produce the largest, comprehensive ophthalmic data resource, with labelled ophthalmic images, anywhere in the world. The reading centre is providing operational and technical support for this programme.
